the pill versus surgical abortion

There are different options available for an abortion procedure, and they mostly depend on how far along you are in your pregnancy. The abortion pill (also known as “Chemical Abortion” or RU486) can be prescribed by a doctor if you are less than 10 weeks pregnant. There is more information on the Abortion Pill below.

A surgical abortion is generally performed if you are further than 10 weeks into your pregnancy. While the procedures vary somewhat depending on how far along you are, during surgical abortion the cervix is dilated (typically through the insertion of rods), and the fetus is removed through suction. Occasionally, depending on the stage of the pregnancy, both forceps and suction curettage are required. This outpatient procedure is considered to be far more invasive than the Abortion Pill, and often requires more recovery time and greater expense

Abortion, as with any medical procedure, carries the risk of serious side effects. In order for you to make the best possible decision for yourself, you need to be fully aware of these risks and side effects.

Every woman’s body is different, and some find that they experience few side effects, while others report multiple and severe effects. Additionally, some side effects are immediate (most of the physical effects fall into that category), while some take weeks or years to present (namely, psychological and emotional side effects).

abortion side effects and risks

Future childbearing: complications associated with abortion may make it difficult or impossible to become pregnant in the future.

Psychological Abortion Risks

It is absolutely vital that, no matter what type of abortion you have undergone, you receive a post-abortion assessment from a medically trained professional.

abortion costs

So, what does an abortion cost? There is a financial cost of an abortion to be sure, but there are also physical and emotional costs to consider.

THE FINANCIAL COST OF ABORTION

Financially, abortion costs vary depending on how far along the pregnancy is and what type of procedure is performed. They can range from several hundreds to thousands of dollars.

THE PHYSICAL COST OF ABORTION

Secondly, there is the physical cost to consider. It can be difficult to understand the physical toll of an abortion on a woman’s body, but there are some important things to consider. Hemorrhage, cramping, infection, hormonal imbalance, infertility, and death are just some of the potential consequences.  These physical effects can be intense and some of them can impact your health and fertility permanently.

THE EMOTIONAL COST OF ABORTION

The hidden cost of an abortion, the emotional cost, is the one that few women consider because it’s a taboo subject in our culture. Abortion is supposed to bring relief to a woman’s situation, so when she has post-abortion feelings of anxiety, depression, guilt, regret, shame, or thoughts of suicide instead, these feelings have added impact because they come as a surprise to her. These emotions can manifest soon after the abortion or surface years later. Since she was the one who made the choice to have an abortion, the post-abortive woman may feel like she has no right to these intense feelings. Emotional healing is possible after abortion, but many women say they would have made a different choice if they had known the devastation abortion would cause in their lives.

more about the pill

let’s talk about the abortion pill specifically

Even though this abortion procedure is done by pill, it still requires the oversight of a doctor. Just like with any other prescription medication, there can be risks and side effects to taking this pill. Some of them can even be severe. You absolutely need a doctor to administer, give instructions and continue to monitor you after the pill is taken.

The abortion pill is actually a series of two medications. The first dosage is taken while you are still at the doctor’s office or clinic. The second is typically taken at home  24-48 hours after the first dose. The initial medication is called Mifepristone, which will blocks progesterone action in your body. This is the hormone that sustains a pregnancy. The second medication is called Misoprostol, which will cause your body to begin contractions that will expel the fetus.

ABORTION PILL RISKS

  • Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion
  • An ongoing unwanted pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
  • Digestive system discomfort
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever

CAUTION: Ordering the Abortion Pill Online

The FDA has regulations surrounding the abortion pill that are there to protect you and keep you healthy. They warn against purchasing the abortion pill online. These online providers often ignore the regulations and safeguards that are set up to protect you by the FDA. You have no way of knowing if the chemicals in these online pills are verified, or what possible side effects and risks you could experience by taking them. All too often, these pills will come from overseas, and are not required to meet the FDA guidelines that are there to ensure your health and safety.

QUESTIONS YOU NEED ANSWERED

ARE YOU PREGNANT?

Home pregnancy tests are all different and some can be tricky to read. Also, many different factors can impact the reliability of home pregnancy tests.

IS IT A NORMALLY PROGRESSING PREGNANCY?

Many early pregnancies end in miscarriage naturally for a variety of reasons. Before spending money on an abortion, it’s important to find out if the pregnancy is healthy enough to continue on its own.

COULD YOU HAVE AN STI?

Certain sexually transmitted infections can cause serious and permanent complications if left untreated before an abortion.

In order to make an informed decision regarding your pregnancy, you should get a medical-grade pregnancy test performed by a competent medical provider.

After you have verified that you are pregnant, you will need an ultrasound to confirm you have a progressing (viable) pregnancy.

You also should be tested for STIs and treated if the test is positive. After all, your health is of the utmost importance and an STI should never go untreated.

It is in your best interest to gather all your facts and options before paying money for a procedure to end a pregnancy that might end on its own anyway.

WHAT IS IT?

The abortion pill also known as Mifepristone or RU-486 is prescribed by a doctor prior to ten weeks of pregnancy. This pill is a two-part process consisting of taking Mifepristone followed by Misoprostol approximately 24-72 hours later.

The first pill is usually given at the prescribing clinic prior to leaving the appointment. When a woman changes her mind, it may not be too late to reverse the effects of the first abortion pill.

But time is of the essence – there is only a short window of time to possibly reverse the effects of that first dosage.
